Mumbai, 16th March 2016: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai has conferred the Distinguished Alumnus Award on Dr. Shantikumar V. Nair, the Dean of Research and Director of Amrita Centre for Nanosciences and Molecular Medicine at Amrita University. The Award was given in recognition of Dr. Nair’s contribution as an outstanding academic and researcher in the field of nanosciences and molecular medicine. He is widely known for his innovations in tissue-engineered products, nano-medicines, energy conversion and storage devices.

The Award was presented to Dr. Nair at a function by Dr. Sandip Trivedi, Director, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. The IIT Mumbai Director Dr. Devang Khakhar read the certificate citation. Receiving the Award, Dr. Shantikumar V. Nair said: “I thank IIT Mumbai for providing me a rock-solid foundation for building a successful career in science and research. I recall that my B.Tech project at IIT Mumbai was on composite materials. Just ten years later, I received the Presidential Award from the US President Ronald Reagan for research in composites – that’s the kind of foundation IIT Mumbai gave me. After 20 years of teaching in America, I returned to India in 2006, inspired by the message of Amma, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi, to serve my country. An enduring lesson that I learnt from her is that one’s career should never be about self-gain but serving the society for larger good."

Dr. Nair received his B.Tech degree in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Mumbai in 1976, and went on to earn MS and PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Columbia University, USA. He joined the faculty of the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Massachusetts, USA, in 1985, where he taught and conducted research in the area of composite materials.

In 2006, Dr. Nair joined the Amrita University where he currently serves as the Dean of Research. He has also established a Centre for Nanosciences and Molecular Medicine (CNMM) at the University, which is now counted among one of India’s premier research institutes.

Under Dr. Nair’s leadership, CNMM has so far published 350 research papers, graduated 23 PhDs and developed over a dozen innovative products that are in various stages of being launched. He is also pioneering India’s first nano-medical GMP facility which will attempt to translate some of the products to the clinic.

Dr. Nair is a joint inventor on almost 40 patent applications filed by CNMM. He is also an inventor on two already granted patents jointly with the United Technologies Corporation, USA, on high-temperature coatings for gas turbine applications, and another two granted patents on a nanotechnology based product
