Amrita University’s cyber-security team in World’s Top 50

·         Bests other teams from India to enter the finals of world’s biggest cybersecurity contest
·         The University’s ‘Team BIOS’ has been ranked first among all the Indian teams and 48th globally, much ahead of teams from IITs
Mumbai, 25th October 2016: Team bi0s, the ten-student cyber-security team of Amrita University, has entered the finals of Cyber Security Awareness Week (CSAW) Catch the Flag contest in New York, the largest and most prestigious student-run cyber security event in the world which is organized by the New York Polytechnic University, USA. More than 2,000 teams from different countries have been competing at the event. The final round in November would be an international competition to be held in the US, India and the UAE.

Amrita University’s Team bi0s, mentored by Vipin Pavithran, competed with thousands of students, hobbyists and professional ethical hackers to reach among the World’s Top 50 teams. It was ranked first among all the Indian teams and 48th internationally. The second Indian team from IIT Roorkee was ranked 122nd internationally. The team from IIT Kanpur was third in India with an international rank of 128.
Said Dr. Krishnashree Achuthan, Head - Center for Cybersecurity Systems: "Entering the finals of CSAW is a formidable accomplishment for any team. While winning a specific CSAW competition is phenomenal, the overall ranking in this contest is also very prestigious and considered all over the world to judge the calibre of students and the universities they represent. Amrita University’s Center for Cybersecurity Systems and Networks has pioneered the training of able cybersecurity engineers with innovative pedagogic techniques. Performing under pressure is no easy task and competing in worldwide events requires blending and showcasing of theoretical understanding and practical application of security principles.”
Team bi0s was formed in 2007 to play the CIPHER CTF 3 contest. Ever since, team bi0s regularly takes part in international CTFs and was also invited twice (fully funded) for the PHDays CTF in Moscow. It was the only Indian team to take part in cybersecurity contests until 2010. To address this issue and to get more students from India to learn cyber security, Amrita University launched India’s first National Level CTF contest, InCTF. This has helped many Indian students to get started with cyber security contests. In 2015, the Amrita University launched a school-level CTF, InCTFj (InCTF Junior Edition), to help school students.
