Composites, a solution for sustainable environment: NITI Aayog

A three-day event to showcase Indian composites industry’s capabilities on a global platform

Mumbai, January 10, 2018: In order to meet ever-increasing needs of India’s defence, marine and infrastructure sector for high performance material, India soon needs to shift to usage of composites material, opined Padma Bhushan Dr. V. K. Saraswat, an eminent scientist and a Member, NITI Aayog. He was speaking while inaugurating the 9th International Conference and Exhibition on Reinforced Plastics – ICERP 2019 at Bombay Exhibition Centre, Goregaon, Mumbai.

When the Indian composites industry is set to mark a double-digit growth by 2021, it can contribute significantly by supplying critical components to India’s defence and marine sector, which will enhance indigenous manufacturing capabilities of the sector, particularly under the ‘Make in India’ initiative; added Dr Saraswat. Advocating the need to bring contemporary reforms, Dr Saraswat urged the industry to adopt aggressive approach in terms of research and development and quality enhancement. He also advocated the need for skilling workforce and ensure recycling measures for sustainability.

Organised by India’s composites industry’s apex trade body, FRP, the 9th ICERP, 2019commenced today in Mumbai where more than 500 global stakeholders will deliberate on opportunities and challenges in India’s Composites Industry. Dr. K. Narayan Reddy, Chairman, FRP, Mr. Pradeep Thakkar, Chairman, ICERP 2019, Mr Vipul Shah, COO, Petrochemical Division, Reliance Industries Limited, Mr S Ramachandran, India Head, Jushi India, Mr. Tom Wassenberg, Global Leader, Technical Marketing – Fabrics, Owens Corning, Dr Selvan, Secretary, FRP were present on the occasion.

Citing NITI Aayog’s stand about boosting sustainable environment in businesses, Dr. Saraswat added that composites materials are used in more than 40,000 end-use applications in many large markets like transportation, power energy, building, and infrastructure. Macro trends driving more sustainable practices include energy use and availability, the impact of climate change and ever-rising population and consumption of resources. There is a need for scalable solution that addresses these challenges, and composites can be answer in a world where demand for sustainable solutions continues to grow.

Dr. K. Narayana Reddy, Chairman, FRP in his welcome address pressed the need for the Indian composites sector to leverage global opportunities. Mr. Pradeep Thakkar, Chairman, ICERP 2019 urged the industry to bring much-awaited transformation to take advantage of increasing opportunities in the sectors like mass transportation, automobiles, marine, defence, etc. Mr. Vipul Shah, COO, Petrochemicals Division, Reliance Industries Limited claimed that Reliance Industries will soon start its carbon fibre plant, which will boost India’s composites industry’s future in the sectors like rail and infrastructure.

According to the Report recently launched by FRP, the Indian Composites market is expected to reach an estimated $2.5 billion at a CAGR of 14.1% by the year 2021. The report states that the future of Indian composites sector looked attractive in the wake of increasing consumption opportunities for composites materials in various industries.
