St+art Mumbai Urban Art Festival’s Sassoon Dock Art Project unveils an experiential exhibition with 30 Indian and international artists

Mumbai - November 14th 2017: With 30 Indian and international artists having completed their murals and installations, St+art India Foundation announced the opening of St+art Mumbai 2017 Urban Art Festival’s the Sassoon Dock Art Project. Guests were introduced to artworks and installations at the experiential exhibition which celebrates the vibrant socially and culturally layered space of Sassoon Dock.

Present at the inauguration ceremony were Mr. Sanjay Bhatia, Chairman Mumbai Port Trust, Mr. Sunil Rane, General Secretary Mumbai Bhartiya Janta Party, Shri. Vinod Tawde, Minister of Education and Cultural Affairs, Ms. Sangita Jindal - Chairman of JSW Foundation, Mr. Jaideep Kanse, G.M-  Marketing (Products) at Asian Paints and Ms. Giulia Ambrogi, Co- Founder and Festival Curator of St+art India Foundation.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sanjay Bhatia, Chairman - Mumbai Port Trust said, “The art project at Sassoon Dock is the first phase of redeveloping the area into a modern fishing harbour by streamlining fishing activities replicating global practices. This initiative is part of the fourth pillar of the Sagarmala project to upgrade all fishing harbours across the country and modernise them. Sassoon Dock is the first step in this direction and will be developed over four phases that will lead to better sanitation and cleanliness along with promoting fish tourism and excursion. The master plan for redevelopment also includes air-conditioned fish market, creche & healthcare facility, open exhibition space and multi-cuisine restaurants.”



Mr. Sunil Rane, General Secretary Mumbai Bhartiya Janta Party added, “Thanks to Giulia Ambrogi, Arjun Bahl, Hanif Kureshi, Akshat Nauriyal and Thanish Thomas (Co-Founders of St+art India Foundation) for changing the face of the MBPT building. The work done by the artists is commendable.”


Ms. Sangita Jindal, Chairman JSW Foundation said “We have always promoted and encouraged art to be available to everyone and are very happy to support this young team. I am extremely impressed with their work.


Mr. Amit Syngle, COO, Asian Paints Ltd. said, “In the tenure of our association with St+art India Foundation, we have worked on various street art projects across cities with a mutual aim to bring art to public. Giulia Ambrogi, Festival Curator & Co-Founder, St+art India said, “Urban art can change spaces and activate important places in the city. Impressed with the global confluence of art and design interventions, Minister of Education and Cultural Affairs, Government of Maharashtra, Shri, Vinod Tawde said, “The Sassoon Dock is an integral part of the city of Mumbai. I would like to invite all students from schools and colleges to visit this exhibition and adults alike to get a deeper understanding of Sassoon Docks’ historical relation with Mumbai.”

The Sassoon Dock Art Project will be open from 11th November to 30th December 2017.

The festival will mobilise artists to create murals, an experiential exhibition, performances, workshops, curated tours, screenings, talks and many more interventions, which will bring various creative communities together. The aim is to connect these areas of modern Mumbai, which seem so distant from one another, yet are part of a shared history and explore how integral these spaces have been to the cultural history and development of the city. With support from Asian Paints and association with Mumbai Port Trust, Singapore Tourism Board, Bonjour India, Institut Francais and JSW group, St+art Mumbai 2017 will bring to Sassoon Dock 30 Indian and international artist.
