Indian Road Safety NGOs observe World Day of Remembrance

COLORS (Coalition for Road Safety), a group of road safety NGOs and affected families from across India, commemorated the millions lost in road accidents in India on the World day of Remembrance on November 15 and urged the Government to introduce a strong road safety law in the Parliament. The World Day of Remembrance, adopted by the United Nations in 2005, is observed on the third Sunday of November each year to remember those killed and injured in road accidents the world over. The year 2015 marks the 20th anniversary of the international observance of the day and 10th anniversary of its adoption by the United Nations.

In 2014, road crashes claimed more than 1.4 lakh lives, and injured another 4.8 lakh people in India. Besides causing monumental loss of life and limb, road crashes lead to a staggering economic loss of 3% of India’s GDP every year. Delhi based Ms Mavis Russell, a grieving mother, who lost her son to a road accident on March 13, 2011, said, “Nobody can bring back my son. We must ensure that our future gets safer roads. We urgently need a strong Road Safety law and its proper enforcement to stop more daughters and sons from dying in such preventable tragedies.”

Reiterating the Group’s position, Mr Piyush Tewari, Founder & CEO, SaveLIFE Foundation, said, “The existing law governing road traffic, The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, does not address the crucial issues of bad road user behaviour, poor enforcement, faulty road and vehicle engineering and safety of vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists.” According to the recently released WHO World Status Report on Road Safety 2015, current Indian laws fail to meet the best practice requirements with regard to road safety and vehicle standards.

The Group has petitioned the Union Transport Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari to table the long-pending Road Transport and Safety Bill in the Parliament.

Cmde. Ranbir Talwar, Executive Director of Indian Head Injury Foundation, said, “It is unfortunate that while several countries across the world are actively commemorating this day, we are yet to accord due importance to Road Safety.”
