THIS INDEPENDENCE DAY, NDTV & TATA SKY PRESENT ‘LIGHTING THE HIMALAYAS- PHUGTAL MONASTERY’

A documentary film on bringing light to one of the remotest and oldest monasteries in the world

August 11th, 2016:

The residents of the 2500 year old Phugtal monastery in the Zanskar region of Jammu & Kashmir have always lived in the dark. However, that is going to change!

NDTV Prime along with GHE (Global Himalayan Expedition) will light up the entire monastery with SOLAR energy, in an attempt to change the lives of the monks living in the monastery.

At an altitude of 14000 feet, a team of 20 highly motivated change makers from around 13 countries take on the task of installing sustainable and scalable solar power to produce electricity. This endearing challenge begins in Leh from where they will have to endure the harshness of a cold desert till they reach Phugtal, a journey that will change their lives forever!

Spearheading the journey, The Global Himalayan Expedition is a social impact enterprise focused on creating tangible change in the remote Himalayan communities. GHE expects to power up 30 more villages.

Paras Lumba, Founder, GHE says, “So, a year ago, I saw a picture of Phugtal Monastery on my computer and I decided that in one year this monastery will have electricity. When I finally saw the monastery lit up, I was deeply humbled by what my team and I had accomplished

Commenting on this unique initiative, Shruti Verma Singh, Head, Strategy and Brand said, “We are honored to be associated with an initiative that is reflective of the DNA of NDTV, which is to create social change to better the lives of people who may be less privileged. We have filmed the installation because we hope to inspire more Indians to create social change and think of giving back to the country. Hence, the screening on Independence Day!”

The team will install 8 solar micro grids along with 300 bulbs across the cave Monastery.

Second Head Lama, Phugtal Monastery , Geshe Thynlis  is grateful to the team for this effort promises a positive change  ‘I m very thankful to the people who have come from all over the world , before today no one had come here to especially help us out .  This is how the world is made better; if a man is suffering it becomes the duty of another to lend a helping hand. We are all inter-dependent.
