The financial capital of India has now been declared as the fourth most polluted mega city in the world, according to latest data released by the World Health Organisation (WHO). According to the BMC’s Environment Status Report (ESR) 2017-18, the annual average PM 10 (particulate matter less than 10 microns) levels in 2017-18 for the nine locations monitored by System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), were above the permissible level of 60 µg/m3 (micrograms per cubic metre of air)—overall average for Mumbai was 93 µg/m3.
The data for Mumbai clearly indicates that even though the city has the advantage of sea breeze, it continues to face a pollution crisis. The most critical of all air pollutants, PM – a mix of solid and liquid particles including dust, sand, smoke, lead, nickel and arsenic. It causes respiratory problems like asthma and heart disease.
Experts said the new data calls for urgent intervention by the state and central authorities regarding air pollution as a serious threat in India. IFAT India 2018 will provide deliberative platform to create potential solutions to these problems through latest technologies available globally, panel discussions and other supporting programs.
