Release of Commemorative Postage Stamp on "Embroideries of India" by India Post

Smt. Swati Pandey, Postmaster General, Mumbai Region released a set of 12 Commemorative Postage Stamps valued at Rs.175/- on “Embroideries of India” on 19th December, 2019 in National Level Philatelic Exhibition – INPEX – 2019 at  World Trade Centre, Cuffe Parade, Mumbai -400 005. Mrs. Damayanti Pittie, President of Philately Congress of India (PCI) and Mr. Rajesh Kumar Bagri, Secretary, PCI were present on the occasion.

In her speech, Smt. Swati Pandey, Postmaster General, Mumbai Region had a brief elaboration on various forms of Indian Embroideries such as Kantha, Kamal Kadhai, Phulkari, Chamba Rumal, Kutch Embroidery and Kashmiri Embroidery etc. She further outlined embroideries being the untouchable heritage of the country. Each style of embroidery has had its development through different kinds of Royal patronages or Socio-cultural exchanges in the course of Indian History like the Chikankari work of Lucknow which has a Mugal origin would have been popular in the north-west frontier provinces. The Kutch embroidery traces back its linage to the tribes of Eastern Europe thereby showing a clear cultural exchange between India and Eastern Europe. Likewise each pattern has its uniqueness and also goes to show India as a meeting point of cultures. Stamps are the mute documents of Histroy.
