Mumbai: The Bombay YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) is a renowned institution dedicated to community empowerment, life transformation, and service in the fields of sports and social change. This is YMCA’s 150th Year and they are celebrating its post-centennial golden jubilee in a big way. This historic 150th-anniversary event will be held on Friday, April 25, 2025, at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre, NCPA, Nariman Point, Mumbai. The event will be graced by the Governor of Maharashtra Mr C.P. Radhakrishnan as the chief guest and World YMCA President Sohela Hayek as the guest of honor. Additionally, several dignitaries from the global YMCA movement, national-level personalities, stakeholders, and well-wishers are expected to attend, according to Bombay YMCA President Noel Amanna.

"In a bustling city like Mumbai, the Bombay YMCA has tirelessly served the community for 150 years with a strong social conscience. From establishing sports facilities and youth hostels to creating inclusive spaces, shelters, and educational initiatives, the organization has made significant contributions. Not only during challenging times but across generations, the YMCA has played a vital role in shaping the lives of Mumbai's residents," said Bombay YMCA General Secretary Aulin Kotian.

Founded on April 25, 1875, at Framji Cawasji Hall in Dhobi Talao, the Bombay YMCA aimed to fulfill the spiritual and temporal needs of young men in a modernizing colonial city. The organization began with a group of 188 regular worshippers, including 20 Indians. Inclusivity and faith-based values were evident in its early days. The YMCA has played a significant role in the development of basketball in India, a sport invented by YMCA instructor James Naismith in the USA. The organization also promoted other sports like football, table tennis, gymnastics, swimming, and billiards over time.

In 1914, the Bombay YMCA established its Physical Education Department and contributed significantly to India's first Olympic team sent to the 1924 Paris Olympics. The first hostel was opened in 1890, providing affordable and safe accommodation for young working men. Today, YMCA hostels across the city serve as shelters for students, professionals, and emerging individuals. In 1972, the Bombay YMCA headquarters moved from Apollo Bunder to the YMCA International House in Mumbai Central, offering residential facilities, training centers, and community programs.Subsequently, the 'Sharan' initiative was launched, establishing a 32-bed temporary shelter in Sakinaka, Andheri, with the support of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Beyond urban development, the YMCA also operates an inspiring rural initiative near Lonavala in Kanhe, providing vocational training to youth and women from nearby villages.

"The Bombay YMCA’s 150-year journey is a testament to the prayer, power of faith and dedication to community service. From its inception in 1875 to today, we have remained committed to wholesome development of youth, empowering families, fostering social change, building a more inclusive and equitable society. As we celebrate this historic milestone, we rededicate ourselves to our mission—nurturing strong individuals, strong families, and strong communities. The sesquicentennial is not just a celebration of our past, commitment for the present and a promise for the future." stated Bombay YMCA President Noel Amanna.

"Our  programmes focus on intellectual, physical, and spiritual development, with initiatives in sports, education, disaster relief and community welfare. Our community projects include a balwadis, night study centre, boys and women's shelter, scholarships and family services, which are aimed at improving quality of life of individuals, communities and society" explained  Mr. Allen Kotian, General Secretary, Bombay YMCA

"At Bombay YMCA, our commitment extends beyond city landmarks into the quiet impact of grassroots initiatives—be it shelter through Sharan, nurturing young minds at balwadis and night study centres, or supporting lives through our boys’ home and vocational training for youth and women. These initiatives reflect our core mission: to serve and not to be served." expressed Bombay YMCA Vice President Michael Manuel Raj.

As we mark 150 years of service, Bombay YMCA continues to be a beacon of hope, empowering individuals and communities to thrive and create a lasting impact for generations to come.
