Air Team Theory: Understanding 10 Types of Team Mates and Best Practices to Succeed
When you understand logic, technology and concepts, you become an engineer. In the same way, when you understand the behavior patterns of teammates, you can become a good manager or leader.
Every team consists of KEY performers, who bring glory, as well as negative VIRUSES, who contribute to the poisonous pollution at the workplace. Just like dry air has ten types of gas components, each with distinctive characteristics, every team has different types of teammates with unique characteristics. Want to identify the Nitrogen (N2), Oxygen (O2), Argon (Ar), Hydrogen (H2), Methane (CH4), Krypton (Kr), Helium (He), Neon (Ne), Xenon (Xe) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) within your team?
He wrote a book with the title “Air Team Theory: Understanding 10 Types of Team Mates and Best Practices to Succeed”. You might have read many books on leadership. Some of them guide you to become a good leader. They warn you to avoid some pitfalls. Some inspire you to become great leaders. Others tell stories of great leaders. This book is about team members. That makes it different.
The Air Team Theory compares the characteristics of each teammate type to the characteristics of each gas. For example, like there is about 20% of Oxygen gas (O2) in the air, same way there is only 20% of passionate team mates who do maximum delivery within any project. There is large number of teammates who are working not for passion towards what they are doing at work place, but for the sake of salary, status and few such fulfillments. I have compared them with Nitrogen gas (N2) which is around 78% of dry air. Moving ahead with various gases in the form of chapters, it reaches till the most negative teammate behavior which talks about damaging teammates who are compared with Carbon Dioxide gas (CO2). We all knew that Carbon Monoxide (CO) gas is toxic to animals that use hemoglobin as an oxygen carrier under certain conditions. This relative of CO2 causes pollution in the team so that good teammates cannot breathe. It is very difficult to remove this poison once it spreads within the team. Hence, the leader needs to constantly keep an eye on CO2 and its relative movements. Also, there is Ozone (O3) layer which is how a good leader cares about his or her teammates, which is also shared in this book. I am sharing my own experience in this book from a fresher to an experienced person, experienced person to technology team leader, technology team leader to manager and manager to CEO of a company. The main difference between leaders and managers is that leaders inspire people while managers have people who work for them. A successful project manager or an entrepreneur needs to be both a strong leader and manager to get their team on board to follow them toward their vision of success.
Air team theory explains positive and negative behavior patterns comparing each gas type’s characteristics with teammate’s behavior pattern. This book is full of scenarios, conversations and behavior patterns of different teammate types. Most importantly, this book also shares the best practices and experiences to effectively lead all the ten types of teammates as one team. For each teammate having certain behavior type, He has provided benefits and concerns at end of each related chapters. You will wonder, how positive teammate behavior pattern may have concerns and negative teammate behavior pattern may have benefits too. Can you imagine what will happen if all teammates are passionate? It is like having only Oxygen in air and other gases missing. It may lead into another problems. Air team theory by me is talking about mixture and right proportion of gases to have success stories as a team. He has shared the challenges He has faced in his journey as teammate or manager, and he has explained how he overcame those. In last few chapters this book has insights on how to choose teammates for any startup where he is sharing his own startup experience which is GrassDew.
This book is for you if you are either a team member or a manager or a director or from top management or an entrepreneur or a leader working with any type or size of team. Anywhere in this book, you will find positive directions in even negative situations occurred due to team dynamics. That is really what mattered in my journey.
This book will act as a mirror for each reader who is working in a team. Most of you will see yourself and even your teammates in at least one of the teammate types explained in this book. The book will make you smile and even bring different emotions to your face as you recall bitter and sweet instances that have happened at your office. It provides useful recommendations and proven solutions for any leader to increase the productivity of any team using simple tips and techniques. It is very interesting and non-boring book to read.
